Alcohol Consumption Linked to Increased Risk of Cancer
Studies have shown that even low-to-moderate alcohol consumption may increase the risk for certain health conditions, especially cancers. A new study analyzed 843 cohort and case-control studies published through 2023 and found associations between alcohol use and several additional health outcomes.
Health Outcomes Affected by Alcohol Consumption
The study included a wide range of health outcomes, including:
- Cancers: breast, colorectal, esophageal, laryngeal, liver, lip and oral, pharyngeal, pancreatic, prostate, and stomach
- Cardiovascular diseases: atrial fibrillation and flutter, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and ischemic heart disease
- Other conditions: Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases, lower respiratory infections, pancreatitis, tuberculosis, and type 2 diabetes
The study found that any amount of alcohol consumption appeared to increase the risk for certain health outcomes, including:
- Lip and oral cavity cancer (15-50% increased risk)
- Laryngeal cancer (15-50% increased risk)
- Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases (15-50% increased risk)
- Pancreatitis (15-50% increased risk)
- Colon and rectal cancer (15-50% increased risk)
The strongest association was between alcohol consumption and pharyngeal cancer, with a 105% increased risk.
