**Cancer Survival Rates Reach Record High**

Cancer is no longer a death sentence. According to a recent report from the American Cancer Society (ACS), more Americans are surviving cancer than ever before. The positive trend is attributed to innovations in precision treatment, expanded screening, and reduced tobacco use.

Today, 70% of those who receive a cancer diagnosis survive for five or more years, compared to 49% in the mid-1970s. People diagnosed with historically deadly cancers are also living much longer than they would have in the mid-1990s. For example, survival rates for myeloma have increased from 32% to 62%, while liver cancer and lung cancer survival rates have improved by 15% and 13%, respectively.

The report's findings point to cancer shifting from a life-threatening disease to a manageable chronic condition. This progress is largely due to three key factors: research-driven innovations, expanded screening efforts, and decades of declining tobacco use.

**Cancer Research and Treatment Innovations**

Cancer research, treatment innovations

Advances in cancer research have led to the development of more targeted and effective treatments. Today, therapies are designed to target specific cancer mutations and harness the body's immune system to fight the disease. This shift has had a significant impact on survival rates.

**Improved Cancer Screening and Early Detection**

Improved cancer screening, early detection

Early detection through screening has improved survival rates for breast, cervical, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancers. However, lung cancer screening rates remain low, with only 19% of eligible Americans being screened. This is due in part to a lack of access to screening and education about eligibility.

Catching cancer early makes it much more treatable. Experts agree that expanding screening efforts and improving access to care could reduce deaths related to lung cancer by up to 20%. New guidelines are expected to be issued within the next five years, which may help increase eligibility for lung cancer screening.
