Foundayo, manufactured by Eli Lilly, is the second GLP-1 medication to be approved in pill form. It works by mimicking a natural hormone that helps regulate appetite and metabolism. The FDA has given Foundayo fast-track approval for use in adults with obesity or overweight who have at least one weight-related comorbid condition.
Key Features of Foundayo:
- Once-daily pill taken orally
- Starting dosage is 0.8 milligrams (mg), increased to 2.5 mg after at least 30 days, and then to 5.5 mg after another 30 days
- Dosage may be increased to 9 mg, 14.5 mg, or 17.2 mg based on treatment response and tolerability
Foundayo is now available through LillyDirect with prescriptions accepted immediately. It will also be available at U.S. retail pharmacies and telehealth providers soon.
The cost of Foundayo varies depending on insurance coverage, but eligible individuals may pay as little as $25 per month for the medication. Those without insurance can purchase Foundayo for $149 per month for the lowest dose.
Experts welcome the approval of Foundayo as a positive step toward managing obesity. "It's a significant milestone to have another GLP-1 tablet," said Pouya Shafipour, MD, a family and obesity medicine physician at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA.
Foundayo: A New Tool for Weight Management
The FDA approval of Foundayo was conducted under the National Priority Voucher pilot program, which aims to expedite the approval of medications needed to address national health priorities. The application was approved 50 days after submission.
Foundayo has been shown to be effective in reducing excess body weight and maintaining long-term weight reduction in adults with obesity or overweight who have at least one weight-related comorbid condition.
