**Cannabis Reclassification Update**

We're excited to share with you a recent development that may bring benefits to Medicare recipients. A White House directive is accelerating the reclassification of cannabis as a less dangerous drug, which could lead to improved access and reimbursement for certain products.

Cannabis refers to a group of plants that includes both marijuana and hemp. While "marijuana" has historical associations, the term "cannabis" is often used when discussing related topics due to its broader scope.

Impact on Medicare Recipients

Last week, President Trump issued an executive order directing the Justice Department to expedite the approval process for changing marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III drug. This reclassification could lead to improved access and reimbursement for certain cannabis-related products.

As a result of this change, Medicare recipients may be eligible for reimbursement for up to $500 per year for qualifying cannabinoid (CBD)-based products. This program is expected to start as early as April 1st, and we encourage you to check with your specific insurance provider for more information.

Benefits for Older Adults

The proposed changes may bring financial relief to older adults who use cannabis-based products. A recent study found that 14% of people 65 years and older reported using a CBD product in the prior year, highlighting the growing interest in these products among this age group.

"This reimbursement program would be highly beneficial for seniors," said Sherry Yafai, MD, an emergency medicine physician and founder of The RELEAF Institute. "It's essential that we provide access to safe and effective treatments for older adults who may benefit from cannabis-based products."
