**Understanding the Connection Between Heart Health and Metabolic Conditions**

Cardiovascular health is closely linked to metabolic well-being, with conditions like diabetes and kidney disease significantly increasing the risk of heart disease.

While many people focus on their heart health, it's essential to recognize that cardiovascular risks are also influenced by physiological processes outside of the heart. Metabolic health and cardiovascular health are intricately connected, making it crucial to address both aspects simultaneously.

A recent report highlights a concerning trend: millions of U.S. adults may be unaware they have undiagnosed cardiovascular risk factors. In fact, an estimated 90% of Americans may have Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) syndrome, a cluster of chronic health conditions that can lead to cardiovascular disease.

The comorbidity of diabetes, kidney disease, and heart disease means that having one or more of these conditions increases the risk of developing another. Key risk factors include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood sugar
  • Excess weight
  • Reduced kidney function

The medical term describing the link between heart disease, diabetes, and kidney disease is CKM syndrome. If left untreated, complications from CKM syndrome can lead to disability and death from cardiovascular disease.

"We encourage people to become aware of the connection between conditions so they and their healthcare team can think about their overall health beyond individual conditions," says Stacey E. Rosen, MD, volunteer president of the American Heart Association.

Other findings highlight the prevalence of overlapping risk factors driving CKM syndrome in the United States:

  • Around half of adults have high blood pressure
  • 1 in 3 adults has high cholesterol
  • Around 1 in 7 adults has kidney disease
  • More than half of adults have prediabetes or diabetes
  • Over half of adults have a high waist circumference

"Each of these factors independently stresses the cardiovascular system," explains Jack Wolfson, MD, a board-certified cardiologist. "Together, they create a perfect storm."

If you're at risk for or living with CKM syndrome, there are steps you can take to minimize your cardiovascular risk. Consult with our healthcare team to discuss lifestyle changes and appropriate treatment options.
