Recent studies have shown that GLP-1 weight loss medications containing tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) can significantly reduce cardiovascular risks for individuals with serious heart conditions.
The research, presented at the SCAI 2026 Scientific Sessions & CAIC-ACCI Summit in Montreal, indicates that these medications may lower heart-related risks for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and those with obesity undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
According to the studies, tirzepatide's ability to manage blood sugar levels and promote weight loss delivers "meaningful cardiovascular benefits." The researchers found that participants receiving tirzepatide who underwent a PCI procedure had a 62% lower risk of death compared to those not receiving the medication.
Experts agree that these findings support earlier studies on the cardiovascular benefits of weight loss drugs. "These medications are not just weight loss drugs, but have meaningful cardiometabolic benefits," said Dr. Kevin Shah, a cardiologist and program director at MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute.
Tirzepatide Reduces Stroke and Heart Attack Risk
In one of the studies, researchers analyzed medical records from 1,281 adult participants with type 2 diabetes who received GLP-1 drugs containing tirzepatide or dulaglutide at the time of their PCI procedure. The results showed that participants using tirzepatide experienced lower rates of major adverse cardiovascular events, including:
- Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- Heart failure
- Ventricular arrhythmias
While there was no difference in rates of stroke among participants, the overall findings suggest that tirzepatide may be a valuable treatment option for patients with serious heart conditions.
