**New Hope for Diabetic Retinopathy Prevention**Diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that can lead to vision loss, may be preventable with the use of tirzepatide medications.
A recent study published in Ophthalmology found that GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Mounjaro and Zepbound, which contain the active ingredient tirzepatide, may lower the risk of diabetic retinopathy in people with type 2 diabetes.
The researchers analyzed electronic health records from 174,000 people across 70 health systems in the United States and found that after one year of treatment, patients taking tirzepatide had a lower risk of worsening diabetic retinopathy or related complications compared to those using lifestyle interventions.
According to Dr. Szilard Kiss, lead author of the study, "those with diabetic retinopathy may be less concerned that taking tirzepatide is going to make their condition worse." The findings suggest a reduced risk of requiring more eye treatments with lasers or injections, which are typically required when retinopathy becomes severe.
Tirzepatide medications have been shown to help manage type 2 diabetes and may also provide an added benefit in preventing diabetic retinopathy. If you're living with type 2 diabetes, talk to your doctor about how tirzepatide can help you manage your condition and reduce your risk of vision loss.
