At the height of his fame, DMC struggled with the pressures of churning out hits, touring, and managing expectations. He revealed that he turned to substance misuse as a way to cope with anxiety, nervousness, and confusion.
"I started reaching for things outside of me to help me navigate what I was feeling," said McDaniels. "It wasn't the music itself, but the expectations that took a toll on my mental health."
After battling addiction and depression for decades, DMC checked himself into rehab in 2004 and has since lived a life of sobriety. He now partners with 1 Million Strong to raise awareness about mental health, addiction, and recovery.
**The Prevalence of Substance Misuse in the Music Industry**Substance misuse is a widespread issue in the United States, affecting nearly 50 million Americans aged 12 and older. In the music industry, more than half of professionals report problematic alcohol or drug use, while around 34% experience clinical depression.
"Mental health problems and addiction are health conditions, not a moral flaw," said J. Craig Allen, MD, Vice President of Addiction Services at Hartford HealthCare. "Recovery is an active maintenance phase, not a cure."
