Heart Failure Couldn’t Stop This Couple from Saying ‘I do’ in the ICU

**A Heartwarming Story of Love and Resilience**

Meet Daniel Phan, who recently tied the knot with his girlfriend Julia in the ICU just days before undergoing lifesaving surgery. Their love story is one of true devotion and resilience.

**A Childhood Sweetheart**

Daniel and Julia met when they were kids after Daniel's parents hired Julia's mom to work at their nail salon. They reconnected on Facebook in 2014, but it wasn't until 2023 that they began dating. "I reached out because I saw [on Facebook] that she was at a concert and I love concerts, so I asked her if she wanted to go to a concert with me," said Daniel.

**Living with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy**

When Daniel was just 11 years old, he was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic heart disease that affects the heart muscle's ability to pump blood. He received a pacemaker shortly after his diagnosis and had to exclude himself from many activities, including sports.

**A Life-Changing Diagnosis**

In his early 20s, Daniel experienced several episodes of over-exertion, which caused him to pass out and end up in the emergency room. In 2024, he began experiencing arrhythmias without exerting himself. On January 15, 2025, he was rushed to the ER after experiencing an intense arrhythmia.

**A New Chapter with LVAD**

Due to his heart failure, Daniel was not eligible for a heart transplant. Instead, he received a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), which works like a water pump to take blood from the left ventricle and pump it into the body. According to Sagar Damle, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon at Piedmont Heart, LVADs are recommended when patients have heart failure that has become refractory to medical therapy.
