**Male Infertility Linked to Increased Cancer Risk**Research has identified a possible association between male infertility and an increased risk of certain cancers, including thyroid and colorectal cancer. A recent study published in the European Journal of Epidemiology found that men with severe cases of infertility may be at higher risk for these non-reproductive cancers.
The study analyzed data from over 1.1 million Swedish males who had children between 1994 and 2014, using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in cases of severe male infertility. The results showed a significantly increased risk of thyroid and colorectal cancer among these men.
Understanding the Connection
The study suggests that genetic factors may play a role in this association, as well as lifestyle choices such as obesity, diabetes, smoking, and physical inactivity. These factors can increase an individual's risk for various cancers, including colorectal cancer.
"This research does not show that use of ICSI causes infertility," notes Dr. S. Adam Ramin, board certified urologist and medical director of Urology Cancer Specialists. "It merely indicates that men who have very severe infertility are at higher risk for these cancers."
Reducing Your Risk
While the exact cause of this association is not yet clear, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk for cancer and maintain good reproductive health. These include:
- Maintaining a healthy weight through regular exercise and balanced diet
- Not smoking or limiting alcohol consumption
- Managing underlying conditions such as diabetes
- Seeking medical attention for any fertility concerns
It's essential to discuss your individual risk factors with a healthcare professional and take proactive steps to maintain good health.
