**Living with HIV for 30 Years: A New Era of Treatment**

At 74 years old, Barbara Roberts has been living with HIV for three decades. However, thanks to a new FDA-approved medication, she is thriving and managing her condition like never before.

Roberts' journey began in 1996 when she was diagnosed with HIV at the age of 44. At that time, the life expectancy for someone with HIV was significantly lower than it is today. In fact, a person living with HIV in their 20s had an average life expectancy of just 39 years.

Initially, Roberts managed her condition with medication and regular visits to an HIV clinic. While her medications helped alleviate symptoms, she did experience some side effects, including fatigue, shortness of breath, and nosebleeds. However, after adjusting her treatment plan, she was able to manage these issues effectively.

In 2021, Roberts' rheumatologist, Dr. Debbie Hagins, asked if she would like to participate in a clinical trial for Idvynso, a daily two-drug single-tablet treatment for people with HIV who are virally suppressed. This innovative medication has changed the way Roberts manages her condition.

After enrolling in the clinical trial, Roberts reported that she experienced vivid dreams for about two weeks after starting the medication. However, since then, her treatment has been smooth sailing. The FDA approved Idvynso on April 21, 2026, and Roberts continues to participate in the clinical trial.

Roberts' story is a testament to the progress that has been made in HIV treatment over the years. With new medications like Idvynso becoming available, people living with HIV are now able to manage their condition more effectively and live longer, healthier lives.
